Statement of Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director and CEO of MomsRising Together, the online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on the 2025 elections:
“Yesterday’s elections brought resounding, meaningful victories for moms and families, with candidates and measures that advance quality, affordable child care; paid family and medical leave; voting rights; reproductive health; and other issues that are vitally important to families, our economy, and our country winning big victories across the country.
“American voters spoke loudly and clearly yesterday, sending the message that we will not tolerate Republican leaders and the Trump Administration taking away our health care and SNAP, causing costs to skyrocket, putting affordable child and elder care out of reach, denying us paid family and medical leave, defunding our public schools, terrifying our immigrant communities, and helping billionaires and wealthy corporations further enrich themselves while working families struggle.
“MomsRising Together reached out to remind moms across the nation to vote this year and they responded. In Virginia, voters elected Abigail Spanberger, the state’s first female governor and a mom, and elected a state legislative majority that may well make it the next state to adopt paid family and medical leave. In New Jersey, voters elected Mikie Sherrill, a mom and a powerful voice for working families, affordability, and a strong care infrastructure, as Governor. And in New York City, Zohran Mamdani made universal child care a centerpiece of his campaign, which won handily.
“Other meaningful victories that MomsRising Together celebrated include:
- Landslide passage of California’s Proposition 50, to help counter a Republican power grab orchestrated by President Trump and state leaders in Texas, who re-drew congressional district lines to gain five more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
- The retention of three Supreme Court justices in Pennsylvania, who are poised to protect abortion and voting rights.
- The election of candidates in Georgia who focused on affordable child care in their campaigns: Alicia Johnson for Public Service Commission, Kimberly Haase for Acworth City Council, Eren Brumley for Roswell City Council, and Christine Rodgers for Marietta School Board.
- Passage of the Families, Education, and Preschool Promise Levy in Seattle; and the statewide ballot initiative on long term care in Washington State.
“Yesterday’s election was a pivotal moment when America’s moms and families took back our power and demanded that lawmakers focus on and address our contributions and needs. It was only the beginning! The work to demand that Republican leaders deliver for families instead of catering to billionaires continues.”
