Lake Research Partners – Memo on Voter Support for the Care Agenda

MomsRising is pleased to share findings and analysis from our latest messaging research, which is in-depth and offers powerful and useful information to help focus the narrative and engage and turn out mom voters this year. We contracted with Lake Research to conduct quantitative and qualitative research with a dual purpose to more fully understand the attitudes of voters, and specifically moms and caregivers, when it comes to the upcoming elections; and to support our longer-term work to advance a policy agenda that addresses what families need to thrive economically, including both care infrastructure and access to abortion.

Today we are sharing the information that is most relevant to the upcoming midterm elections. Key findings follow. They are based on a dial survey of 1,500 likely voters conducted from August 12 – 21. It includes oversamples of African American, Asian American Pacific Islander, Latinx, and LGBTQ likely voters, as well as suburban caregivers and Democratic surge voters. The full memo is pasted below – and we will share additional information as we continue to dig into the research post-election.

MomsRising is using these findings, along with our extensive grassroots GOTV work, to empower moms and caregivers to vote in this election.

Key Findings:

  • Voters are willing to reward a candidate who supports the care agenda and punish a candidate who opposes it. Seventy percent of women and 84% of moms are more likely to vote for a candidate who SUPPORTS a caregiving agenda that includes 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave, universal child care and pre-k 3 and 4, and increased investments in Home- and Community- Based Services that help people live more independently as they age or if they have a disability.
  • It is powerful to combine paid leave with abortion access. Two-thirds of women and 62% of moms are likely to vote for a candidate who says, “access to abortion care and paid family and medical leave are both extremely important for families’ economic security, which in turn benefits our country’s economic security too.”
